Reflection and Advice

My research topic was genetically modified organisms. My thesis was the negative affects GMOs had on humans and the environment. I have always heard that GMOs are bad for you and they are no good, and they are not safe. So I prepared for the worst when it came time to do my research. For me I found out that GMOs in my opinion are both good and bad. Neither one for me at least outweighs the other. There was not a lot of scientific evidence that really showed GMOs to be this big problem, but there were some studies done. Most negativity towards GMOs was opinion based or attacks on Monsanto because they are a monopoly when it comes to agriculture. I am still torn whether or not I am for or against GMOs, but I think it would be better with out it. I enjoyed during my research and I thought that it was an eye opener. There were some things that I knew already and several things that I did not. I almost changed my thesis while I was writing my paper I feel like the pros and cons when it cam to GMOs where equal and so was the research. No one could give a straight answer it was always "This why its bad, but this is also why it's good". I found all the databases useful. My favorite was the ProQuest Historical Times because it was the most easily to use and I liked the articles that I found. They were easy to read, unbiased and filled with a lot of information. They were not opinions and they were well research.

While doing my research paper I have learned that I do not like doing research papers and they are not fun. My understanding of college level research has changed for the better. I think I now understand what it takes to do a research paper. It is a lot of work and took a lot of dedication. You also need to be interested and passionate about your topic unless you will not have fun doing it. Since I found GMOs interesting, I thoroughly enjoyed writing about it.

Advice I would give future students who wanted to complete a successful research paper for ENG 103 is one pick a topic that you are genuinely interested in from the beginning. Two, make sure you do all of the milestones throughout the semester. This is only going to help you in the end because your paper will pretty much be written for you. Three find one or two really good sources and let the rest be your supporting sources. Those one or two sources are going to really help you shape and mold your paper.

I wrote papers before the same length sometimes even longer, but this one was a lot more stressful for me. I just feel like there was a lot more involve with this one. Some advice I would give is to stay away from Google and use the research speed dial. You can find a several entries on these platforms so it is useful and beneficial for the sake of your paper. Some things I would have done differently are doing to more research. Even though we had the milestones, sometimes I still felt like I was behind, and I also felt I could of done more. I have learned that researching isn’t about what you think. Research is more focus about the facts and how you can bring them to life on paper.

My Final Research Paper Game Plan

During next week I need to work on making sure my paper is six pages and cohesive.  I need to make sure that my paper goes in line with my thesis and have supporting facts from my sources. Two ares I need to work on the most is improving my argument and adding a conclusion. I would try to make time to work on the paper either Wednesday or Friday.

My Research Topic - Negative Effect on the Internet

For my research paper I decided to choose a topic under Promise and Peril of Science. The two topics that jumped out at me were: negative effect on the Internet and genetically engineered food.  I like the negative effects of the Internet topic because I am on the Internet everyday. Some of my classes in the present and past were in a computer lab. So I cannot escape being in front of a computer. Our cell phones are even considered little mini computers. So it would be interesting to see what impact it has for our society. I remembered reading Nicholas Carr article a couple years ago and I agreed with most of the things that he was saying in his article. A lot of the stuff in his article is actually a lot easier said than done, but I agreed with him. I am also interested in reading his book “What the Internet is Doing to Our Brains” to help me with my research paper as well. To also hopefully provide some more in depth look into his reasoning.

Welcome to my blog

Hello my name is Nancy. I am a communications studies major. This blog is for ENG 103 Research Paper. This is my last semester. I will be graduating this summer. I am planning on taking a semester off before I attend a four-year school. I have not yet decided if I am going to continue with communications or focus more on public relations. I was also contemplating about Business with a focus in entrepreneurship. I just finished up an internship at a special events planning non-profit agency and I was able to attend New York Fashion Week (NYFW). That was my first time at NYFW and it was very gracious of them for letting me attend a couple of shows. This was a great experience for me because I would like to be a Fashion Publicist in the near future. It was a great way to get my feet wet.

I am not a big film watcher, but I do enjoy comedies. I like to laugh. I don’t always like watching movies with heavy plots. One of my favorite book genres is historical fiction because I don’t like history. When historical events are coupled with a fabricated story line it makes it more interesting to me. I also like some science fiction and fantasy novels because it is a great way to get loss in a different world. It also gives you a chance to use your imagination. I also occasionally read some Young Adults but most of them are not interesting.

I am a technology optimist. I love technology and I love the advancements that it makes everyday. If I had the money I would own every single gadget and upgrades that are available.  Since I don’t have the money I typically admire from a far. I think my technology level is pretty basic, but I would like to dive in and learn more about the technical sides and pre production. Be able to get into how things works and specifications, and know what they mean. When it comes to people today and technology I think that it is a toss up. It really depends on the person. Some people love technology and embrace. Some people cannot stand it and refuse to give in. The rest just always ends up adapting to the times. Most people I know typically adapt and there is always some type of learning curve.
